The season of giving and gratitude is upon us and our Utica Zoo team is immensely grateful for the unwavering support you’ve provided. The animals entrusted to our care depend on us for exemplary care, and we, in turn, depend on cherished partners and donors like you.

2024 has been an exciting year for us, and we couldn’t have achieved our second accreditation round (the first was in 2018) with the esteemed Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) without your support. Because of you, we accomplished this gold standard, set by our peers in this industry. Of the approximately 2800 entities caring for animals in the US, only 237 of those facilities are AZA accredited!
Preparing for this AZA inspection and hearing was a significant investment; the zoo has truly never looked better. With the support provided by our community, we paved sidewalks and roadways, added new fencing, painted and stained, upgraded plumbing and heating, landscaped, and several habitats received renovations. Our goals for improvement continue throughout many areas of the zoo, with new species and opening areas of the zoo to visitors that have been closed to the public for years.
Now the request…Even when mild, the upstate New York winters pose significant financial challenges for the Utica Zoo. Our expenses surpass our incoming revenue, and this year, with escalating costs in food, utilities, labor, veterinary care, and more, we anticipate an even greater need for help. The daily operating costs average over $7,500 per day, especially during the off-peak seasons.
