9th Place: Mexican Spider Monkey (the Monkey)

The second animal that utilizes the raft to finish the race was the monkey. The monkey used it’s dexterity to help steer the raft across the river. As the second of the three to cross, the monkey became the ninth animal in the lunar cycle.

Monkeys differ from other primates, such as apes like our white handed gibbons, because they have tails. Spider monkeys use their prehensile tail like an extra arm or leg. Their tail helps them to grip, grasp, and climb to navigate their home. Unfortunately, Mexican Spider Monkeys are critically endangered, due in large part to habitat loss and illegal removal from the wild for the pet trade.
